The Government of Ghana has taken a major step toward ending period poverty with the launch of the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative, a government-backed programme aimed at distributing free sanitary pads to two million girls in public schools across the country. The launch was held on Thursday, 24th April 2025, at the SDA Cluster of Schools Park in Mamprobi, Accra.

The initiative, led by President John Dramani Mahama, is part of broader efforts to improve school attendance, promote menstrual health and empower girls with the dignity and confidence they need to thrive. The President described the initiative as a long-term commitment to girls’ education and well-being, stating: “No girl in Ghana should miss school because of her menstrual period.”

The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, also highlighted the far-reaching impact of this intervention, which seeks to dismantle social stigma and provide a more equitable learning environment for girls.

The event gathered a cross-section of national stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society actors and school authorities. It was chaired by the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

Reflo Company Ltd was honoured to be represented at this important national event by its Managing Director, Ms. Rebecca Osam. As a Ghanaian company dedicated to high-quality menstrual care products, Reflo Company Ltd recognises the importance of national policies that prioritise girls’ health and education. The company commends the government’s bold vision and reaffirms its continued support for initiatives that seek to eliminate period poverty and promote menstrual dignity for all.
